Changing Our Attitude

I’ve written previously about how important it is on our journey to becoming financially fit to stop placing the blame on everyone and everything other than ourselves. The fact of the matter is we are the problem and something has to happen if we are ever going to change course and get on the right track.
WE have to change, and the change must start with our attitude about money. Once we get our attitudes straight, then we can begin to change our habits.
Obviously, I approach this subject from a spiritual perspective. I see all of life, including my finances through the lens of a Christian. I believe money and how we manage money is absolutely a spiritual issue. This is why the Bible has so much to say about the subject of money.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
I’m sure most of us would completely dismiss the thought that we were a slave to money…but let me ask you, what do you spend all of your time doing? Working for money, right? If you are drowning in debt like most Americans, what do you spend a good bit of your time thinking about? Money.
Most of us spend a lot of our time worrying about money, thinking about money, wondering how to get more of it…and then working for it, only to give it to someone else as soon as we get it! This is the cycle that debt puts us in. Most of us are slaves to our money.
But Jesus says this ought not to be.
Now of course, I am talking a lot about Jesus, and approaching this from a Christian perspective, but the truth is this same idea is true no matter who you are or what you believe. Most of us are spending our time working FOR money, as opposed to having our money work for us.
Wouldn’t it great if instead of seeing money as the end to which we were working FOR, and instead saw money as a means to something far greater? I believe this ought to be the attitude for us all.
What that greater end for you is, I have no idea. It could be financial peace, and freedom, and not having to live paycheck to paycheck. It could be buying a house. It could be wanting to help your loved ones.  It could be wanting to give more to your church. It could be any number of things!
Whatever it is, I think most of us would rather think and worry about money less…and would rather have our money work for us, rather than us working for our money.
If this is you, then let me challenge you to change your attitude about money. See money as a means to a greater end, rather than an end in and of itself. Stop looking at debt and struggling financially as the norm, and instead start seeing it as a problem that you CAN solve.
Again, this starts with our attitude. And once our attitudes change, THEN we can begin to take the proper steps to change course and get on the road to financial freedom and the peace of mind that comes along with it.
